Phonebloks: The Phone of the Future

Have you ever imagined living or functioning each day without a phone? Some may still be able to say yes but the majority today have become so reliant on cell phones, they cannot be able to fulfil daily tasks without it. From larger inbox capacity to applications such as calendar, memo, notes, and even wifi and internet search engines, the cell phone has become the handy partner for the busy career people. These innovations have not only introduced changes to human activities but have also influenced our culture. As for those who just want to have fun, phone companies have inserted cameras, photo applications, Siri, and lots of games into the electronic device. Cell phones indeed make life easier and more efficient.
However, another issue to be considered would be that of the environment. The large-scale mass production of cell phones has long begun to take its toll on the environment. This is due to the improper disposal of phone components such as its batteries that contain harmful substances. According to the Ministry for environment of New Zealand,

“Mobile phones contain a number of heavy metals which are toxic, such as cadmium, lead, beryllium and antimony. Using a handset is harmless until it is thrown into the landfill or illegally dumped. As the handset and battery degrade, they could release heavy metals into the soil and groundwater. A nickel cadmium rechargeable battery in a mobile phone is particularly hazardous because of the high toxicity of the cadmium most contain.”  (The safe disposal of mobile phones 2014)

This is why a team of three techies and researchers teamed up with Motorola, CYSO, CMNTY, and SOLON ADVOCATEN in pitching an idea called Phonebloks. Using the lean start-up method in doing business, they have opened their ideas to everyone for consultation as prospective customers of the product. In their product demo video, Dave Hakkens, Gawin, and Tomas Halberstad explain that we usually throw away electronic devices and most of the time it is only just because of a broken component.  They further explain that this is because these products are not made to last. Furthermore, this makes electronic waste one of the fastest growing waste streams of the world.
Phonebloks are phones made of detachable blocks from its battery to its storage unit, cameras, Bluetooth, and wi-fi components. These are all connected to the base in a manner where you try to piece lego blocks together on top or at the bottom of a wide square lego base. The electric signals run through the base and into the component blocks while two small screws secure everything in place.  That way, if one component is broken, you can just detach that certain block from the base and replace it with a new one. One can even customize his or her phone through the same set of steps in adding new features such as a radio block, a camera block, or even the screen and speaker.  This way, the phone is not put to waste. It is easy to use, easy to update, and is environment friendly. (Our Goals 2014)

They are still looking for more companies to partner with and for more support from the public in order to mass-produce the phone. But if this product enters the market, not only can we now have efficient and customized phones, we can now also reap the benefits of this innovation without causing much harm and degradation to the environment. This may also be the beginning of a sustainable, environment-friendly technological advancement period.

The Kobe 8 System

The road to perfection goes on as the creators continue to push the limits of Kobe’s shoe. Speed, precision, vision and versatility are very powerful traits on their own. But putting them all together made them more invincible. This was how Nike Performance Footwear Creative Director, his team and Kobe Bryant himself pushed the limits of the past Kobe shoes that led to the creation of a better system that meets Kobe’s performance.

“I’m always focused on improving my game, to perform at my best. I want  my shoes to mimic the speed of my game. By shaving fractions off the height and weight, it allows me to play faster with more control so I can maneuver across the court – I want to feel I’m moving at the speed of light” Kobe said.

The design team decided to incorporate an innovative textile for the first time in a basketball shoe known as the Nike Engineered Mesh Technology. The textile’s composition is 90% mesh that provides more breathability together with more durability, a combination like no other. The textile is tightly woven to a snug, glove-like fit for more strength and felxibiity to bend naturally with the feet. Also, the no-sew overlays on the toe and a 3D heel counter give more support for tougher conditions and gives Kobe a dynamic fit. The Engineered Mesh is the solution for staying dry and comfortable.

The snake-inspired graphics of the shoe was created by Erick Goto, a graphic designer for the Nike Basketball footwear team. The design was made to match Kobe’s on-court alter ego, The Black Mamba, and further inspired by the Chinese Year of the Snake in 2013. Goto worked with a more modern and geometric interpretation of the snake skin and gave each pair of shoes a unique tongue pattern for its own snake persona. The snake inspired design was also used in Kobe VI and Kobe VII but each shoe had different sets of unique patterns showing the improvement from one shoe to another.

The shoe’s full-length Lunarlon midsole provides ultra-lightwieght, low profile cushioning and low-to-the-gound for improved stability. Nike’s Lunarlon Technology is 30% lighter than standard Phylon Foam. It is inspired by the way astrounauts walk on the moon, hence the name Lunarlon. It reduces the pressure on the foot upon impact by distributing the force of the impact across the entire platform, protecting the foot’s most vulnerable areas. Researchers in the Nike Sports Research Lab found out that Lunarlon foam is soft and dissipates force more evenly over a larger area so athletes aren't pounding all their pressure in one place. It protects the foot’s fragile bones more effectively. Lunarlon Technology has a bouncy cushioning without sacrificing stability.

For the shoe’s sole, a tenacious traction is given by a one-millimeter rubber outsole that combines the classic herringbone and snake-scale pattern. The sole uses less rubber compared to traditional soles for lightweight durability and excellent multi-surface traction. This give Kobe a superior court feel and fuels his lightning-fast cuts and crossovers. A glass composite midfoot shank support is added to provide extensive torsional rigidity and midfoot support.

The Kobe 8 System is currently the lightest in the Kobe Shoe Series at 9.6 ounces in a U.S. men’s size 9.  And what makes it even better is because of the advanced technologies applied in the creation of the shoe, it has been considered a very versatile shoe that applies its technologies not just in basketball but also in other sports like volleyball, tennis, running and trainning.
Finally, “The Kobe 8 is about enhanced performance. It is simplistic, but has an edge to it.” Kobe said.

Dr. Fe del Mundo: She Was Everything That She Could Be

Only few people can say that they have a heart for others, but fewer can wholeheartedly show.

One of the few people is the National Scientist Dr. Fe del Mundo. She dedicated her life in service to others. If most of the people today would say that they would want to graduate because they want to have a comfortable life, Dr. Fe del Mundo would not just probably aim to graduate, she aimed to discover, to use and to apply her knowledge not to have a comfortable life for herself but to help others have a comfortable life. She was a “paediatrician, a scientist, a teacher, a researcher, an upholder of public health,” (Aquino, 2011) and most of all, a mother. As a paediatrician, she applied all her learnings by helping ill people, especially the outcasts. “During the Japanese Occupation, she opened the Children’s Home and for a year and a half, she had mothered some 400 children and had helped women and ill people during the war.”(Official Biography, 2011) She established the “Chldren’s Memorial Hospital, later known as Dr. Fe del Mundo Medical Center” and expanded with the establishment of “Institute of Maternal and Child Health.” (National Scientist, 2011) To establish these medical centers, “she sacrificed her personal belongings, etc.” (National Scientist, 2011)She researched on “viral diseases, particularly those on polio-myelitis, rubeola, rubella, and varicella.” (National Scientist, 2011) She invented “an inexpensive incubator which was made of bamboo in 1973.” (National Scientist, 2011) “She developed an improvised bamboo radiant warmer and a photo therapy device that could cure babies with jaundice.” (National Scientist, 2011) All these in dedication to those who couldn’t afford expensive cure to their diseases. Dr. Fe del Mundo was working for the poor and incapable, and all her works were heartfelt. She was most dedicated to the poor that she “formulated strategies to incorporate the ways of hilot or traditional midwife to the family planning and birth attending framework of health services in rural communities.” (National Scientist, 2011) Though Dr. Fe de Mundo had a heart for the poor, she also aimed to help people aside from the poor. She helped in every possible way, in action and in words. She was a writer in the “Journal of Pediatrics, Journal of the Philippine Medical Association, and Manila Sunday Times Magazine.” (Official Biography, 2011)In these papers, she was a “steady contributor,” helping her readers with her health advices and guidance. (Official Biography, 2011) All her works were to promote public health and all cited here are not the complete list. Words aren’t enough to cite all her works.

Because of her contributions not just to her nation but to the world, she had received bulk of titles. She was the very “first female and first Asian to be enrolled in Pediatrics at the prestigious all-male Harvard Medical School as a Philippine Commonwealth scholar.” (National Scientist, 2011) She didn’t just made her country, the Philippines, proud but also the Asian and women communities. She was titled with many “firsts.” She was the first “woman to head a general hospital in the Philippines, Filipino diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics, Asian president of the Medical Women’s International Association, woman president and founder of the Philippine Pediatric Society and Philippine Medical Women’s Association.” (National Scientist, 2011) She received national and international awards. Some are the “Elizabeth Blackwell Award for her outstanding service to mankind in1966, Ramon Magsaysay Awards for her public service as a private citizen in 1977, the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Award, and in 2010, the Order of Lakandula with the rank of Bayani by the Philippine Government.” (National Scientist, 2011) She received much more awards and she was deserving of all those awards. She was not only a citizen, a Filipino, an Asian, a doctor or a teacher – she was everything that she could be.

Continuation of Garbage: Treasure of Humankind

I made some Tag-lines to promote Bio-gas technology especially in the Philippines. I borrowed a picture from the internet and incorporated it with one of my taglines.

I have other taglines, I would like to use for this advocacy.

Basurang Mapangahas
Malapit nang magwakas
Pag dumating si BIO-GAS!

Kuryenteng mura ba ka'mo?
Gasolinang presyo'y talo
BIO-GAS ang para sa'yo

Basura'y bawasan
Ingatan ang kalikasan
Tangkilikin ang BIO-GAS
Nang sakuna'y bawasan

GARBAGE: Treasure of Human Kind

We can observe that midst all the wonderful discoveries and economic growth; consumerism is also in progress. As a result, there will always be garbage. It is sad to think that there are plenty of solid and biological wastes we accumulate in this world. It was said that if city areas are joined together, solid wastes would amount to 1.3 billion tonnes of solid wastes every year. Moreover, this might increase up to 2.2 billion tonnes per year in the year 2025, a 70 percent increase (2013, World Bank). Waste management has long been a very expensive project for many governments that could affect budget money for providing basic social needs, infrastructures, and health care. This is why in most developing countries; solid waste management has long been an issue, a problem that is related to public health, pollution, economy, and the quality of life. Some waste management designs end up in landfills producing non-segregated waste to pile up.

In the end, it pollutes and disturbs land areas, ecosystems and even water systems.
Since this is such a major issue, waste management should be well-planned and systematic. Practices brought about by waste management are ought to be cost-effective, could lessen green-house emissions, lessen flooding, and even become income-generating.
Many waste management plans have given very efficient results of preserving the environment and becomes very beneficial for consumers as well. One of this ways is turning waste material into energy. There are many ways to do that but I will focus on is the technology that Quezon City and Pangea Green Energy Inc. used.

[(C) Quezon City Government http://www.quezoncity.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&id=207%3Athe-payatas-dumpsite-from-tragedy-to-triumph&Itemid=235&showall=1]

Quezon City, Philippines has a “Waste to Energy” facility, a bio-gas powerplant in Payatas. This city accumulates 1,979 tons of garbage everyday and 1,200 tons from it is dumped in the Payatas landfill. The “Waste to Energy” facility is said to help in lessening the accumulation of too much garbage and landfills and make it very useful in making electricity. A bio-gas powerplant makes use of animal wastes, crops, food wastes to be transformed as biogas. It makes electricity from cleaner and more environmentally-friendly way. Bio-gas plants use the fermentation of organic wastes by using anaerobic digesters where the broken down organic wastes and are set in very high temperatures without oxygen. The wastes decompose quickly and an end product is methane. Methane gas is trapped and is converted to become fuel for cars and electricity.

This technology in a long term process, will not only help in reducing trash in by 90% but it will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their landfills said the Quezon City government. At the same time, it helps in subsidizing the cost of electricity in Quezon City. The facility produces 200 kW of renewable energy. Half of this becomes free for the local governments’ use and for their nearby projects and currently the 100 kW left is for the use of Meralco for business purposes. It is indeed a technology that Science helped us discover to help in advancing quality of life.

The Basics of Motion Sensors

Before we even reached this point of our time in which we have such advanced technology, we had already envisioned a world that is like this and maybe something more.
One of the goals that most men, scientists, or not, desired, is that we would be able to move a lot things or anything else for that matter with just our typical body movements. And this is where the development of motion sensing technology comes in. It is one of the areas in technology nowadays that we keep on developing. But how do they even work?

Above line is the link to my podcast discussing the basics of the motion sensors used in motion sensing technology.

Are Things Getting Larger or Smaller?

I’m never fond of using smart phones or tablet. I can survive a month without any social networking activity. I do play games but rarely downloads any new applications out in the market. Not that I’m a loner or alien to these technologies, I just don’t feel like spending too much time for it.

It steals your time for all other things you must give more importance than that stupid colourful flat wide screen devices. I hate the idea that people who have these technologies are also having more convenience in life. Maybe I was just jealous, since we could not afford to buy one.

As I sat down in front of our tambayan[i], bored, I found myself staring at every person’s hand that passes by. Most of them are holding cellphones; talking to someone, texting, playing flappy bird[ii] or subway surfers[iii], surfing the net, making selfies[iv], and all other things you may think of. They are all seemed to be having fun and maximizing every capability of their hand held friends.

I took out my phone and looked at it.

It’s small, with a small screen and blurred keypad. I flipped it and remembered I forgot where I dropped the back casing. I took a glimpse of the other phones and as expected, it’s a lot wider, slimmer, faster, and more stylish than my phone.

Then I whispered to myself,” My phone is smaller, but doesn’t it was what human’s first rationale for making it ‘cellular’? For it to fit in our pockets and easier to hold, right? So why are they making it bigger again? Is that what we really wanted or phone manufacturers just did that for them to sell a phone you can call 'new' and earn from it? Even televisions are getting smaller than the first time it was invented. But suddenly, it has grown as wide as the walls in our houses.”

My head is aching. Even the smartest person in the world would never be able to predict for sure what would happen to technologies in the future.

Students started coming to the tambayan. I stared back at my cp[v] and noticed how in bad shape it was. I’m quite embarrassed of it, of owning it.
“Am I a bad owner or you just stink?”, I asked but my phone but it constantly stays firm.

My boyfriend taps me on the head and took the phone from my hand.

“Give your phone a break. It has nothing to do with your insecurities. It was just built to make you happy, and you should.”
