Are Things Getting Larger or Smaller?

I’m never fond of using smart phones or tablet. I can survive a month without any social networking activity. I do play games but rarely downloads any new applications out in the market. Not that I’m a loner or alien to these technologies, I just don’t feel like spending too much time for it.

It steals your time for all other things you must give more importance than that stupid colourful flat wide screen devices. I hate the idea that people who have these technologies are also having more convenience in life. Maybe I was just jealous, since we could not afford to buy one.

As I sat down in front of our tambayan[i], bored, I found myself staring at every person’s hand that passes by. Most of them are holding cellphones; talking to someone, texting, playing flappy bird[ii] or subway surfers[iii], surfing the net, making selfies[iv], and all other things you may think of. They are all seemed to be having fun and maximizing every capability of their hand held friends.

I took out my phone and looked at it.

It’s small, with a small screen and blurred keypad. I flipped it and remembered I forgot where I dropped the back casing. I took a glimpse of the other phones and as expected, it’s a lot wider, slimmer, faster, and more stylish than my phone.

Then I whispered to myself,” My phone is smaller, but doesn’t it was what human’s first rationale for making it ‘cellular’? For it to fit in our pockets and easier to hold, right? So why are they making it bigger again? Is that what we really wanted or phone manufacturers just did that for them to sell a phone you can call 'new' and earn from it? Even televisions are getting smaller than the first time it was invented. But suddenly, it has grown as wide as the walls in our houses.”

My head is aching. Even the smartest person in the world would never be able to predict for sure what would happen to technologies in the future.

Students started coming to the tambayan. I stared back at my cp[v] and noticed how in bad shape it was. I’m quite embarrassed of it, of owning it.
“Am I a bad owner or you just stink?”, I asked but my phone but it constantly stays firm.

My boyfriend taps me on the head and took the phone from my hand.

“Give your phone a break. It has nothing to do with your insecurities. It was just built to make you happy, and you should.”
