According to Wikipedia, the social and
political issues that the episode of the Twilight Zone Series, Time Enough At Last, was dealing with were “anti-intellectualism,
dangers of relying to technology and difference of loneliness from
being alone.” Through these issues, the episode had marked a
promising impression to its audience, especially to those living during the time the episode was premiered. It was because, at that time, the mentioned issues were actual issues that
the United States was undergoing. Because of this, most people could
relate to the concept of the episode.
If I am to reconstruct a new version
of that episode, I would make the story something like this:
Bemis, addicted into surfing the net,
couldn’t pursue his passion because of his wife and his boss.
Though he had his device, his wife would cut their connection to the
Internet and his boss would not allow him to use his device inside to
office. To get away from these people, he always sneaked in the office vault to use his device. One time at the vault, he found a newspaper with a headline about extreme
disasters that struck different continents recently. Upon getting the
newspaper, there was a sudden trembling of the ground and a rumbling
sound outside. Bemis suddenly collapsed. He woke up and
found out that everything outside the vault was destroyed. There was
no one except him.
A day had passed and he felt that he preferred having
his wife and his boss than being alone in that apocalyptic world. He
was about to kill himself because of loneliness of being alone when he saw an
internet shop. Everything inside the shop was destroyed except for
the Internet router. He connected the device to the internet and surfed the net. He realized that though he could pursue his passion, there was no one that he could communicate with using social media networks, no one to battle with him in his games, etc. Though he had all the time, he still felt sadness. One time when he was about to grab his device, it accidentally slipped away from his hand and fell into destruction. Bemis
burst into tears since the only tool that had made him at least happy was now destroyed.
From this version, I am discussing how
most of us today are addicted into surfing the net that we forget our
obligations, the need to interact with others personally, and so many other
things. People depend so much on their devices and technology that some will admit that they couldn’t live right without these tools. Another issue that I'm introducing is the issue of unexpected disasters that cause so much destruction to
many parts of the world-climate change can also be incorporated with this. I believe that with this new version, I can at least expose the current struggles of our society.
