The Fly (Recipe for Disaster or Recipe for New Learning)

I think “The Fly” (1958) is actually a very nice film to ponder about. It made me realize how human thinking and imagination can open new possibilities and eventually bring about new kinds of realities. The film became very interesting for me because it made me think what the fly might have done to result to the unfortunate things happening in the story. It became more entertaining as the investigation came to progress. It was interesting to watch how technology totally enslaved the scientist and his life, making many stupid embarkations and failure. It somehow brings to mind how being enslaved by technology means. The film gives a lesson that whenever experimenting or introducing new technology, humanitarian and moral actions must always take place. Meaning, no harm or risks must be done towards any person or any animal. Failure to see that made the scientist to fail.
It is a morality play, and brings to mind that everything and everyone around us must naturally take our course in the universe. I believe that inventions could advance any technology or introduce new products to improve lives but we can never play or have the disposition of a god. We can always make a mistake. Hence, there is a responsibility for everyone in the realm of technology.

The movie being set in the 1950’s brought me also to thinking about the postwar thinking which is about peace and acceptance or pragmatism. People back then realize that some of the technology may lead us to fighting each other or demoralizing each one. Some technologies were the ones that led to the destruction of the world, World Wars. Eventually, the people’s mindset was toward a more humanitarian purpose. Technology should benefit lives and never destroy or put any lives at risk.
