I
find the dark movie "The Fly" as a fascinating representation of the
problems in both science and human curiosity. The movie has been iconic over
the years in showing the failures and problems that science and technology
could have if we are to advance further or progress. It is interesting to say
the least, because of its intricate story, wonderful casting, and the feel of
suspense due to the wonderful background music.
The
film showed how the people in the late 50s think about science and the progress
it could have in the future. Such imaginations they had to actually think that
teleportation and genetic alteration or mixture could actually occur in real
life. I may be skeptical about these futuristic phenomenons but who is to say
that they are entirely impossible. Sure enough, the way they portrayed
scientists as workaholics and the possible advancement of technology as devil's
work is truly fascinating.
The
concept in which a simple mistake can lead to great troubles is a great lesson
from the movie. A single and simple miscalculation or carelessness can lead to a
life-threatening problem. For example is the cat's disappearance into thin air.
Without understanding his machine, Andre experimented with his cat's and his
own life. The end result is what only matters to us humans. When we get
wonderful results like our advancements in technology, even if we don't
understand how or why we got said results, we celebrate and repeat the process
again and again without understanding the truth behind all of it. Even so, the
untimely end of Andre shows that there is divine punishment awaiting those who
mess with the system that is nature's way. Though going at it in a grotesque
way as to put a man's limbs on a fly isn't necessary.
