The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
is a based on Suzanne Collins' novel Catching Fire and is the second
instalment to The Hunger Games Trilogy. Catching Fire is about the “girl
on fire”, Katniss Everdeen, tries to protect her loved ones from President Snow
because she has become a symbol of hope for the people of the districts who
started to rebel against Panem. President Snow tries to eliminate her in the
Panem’s Third Quarter Quell wherein she, alongside with Peeta, will be
competing against representatives chosen from the victors in each district.
According to The Merriam Webster Dictionary,
science fiction is a “story about how people and societies are affected by
imaginary scientific developments in the future,” and I thing that the movie Catching
Fire falls under this category. In this movie, there were hovercrafts and
advance technologies which seem almost impossible for humans to be able to
create such as the dome wherein the Quarter Quell took place. They were able to
control the environment inside the dome, and even add poisonous gasses and
wild, dangerous animals that could cause real damage and even death to humans
by just using technology through computers.
Past. The film depicts the past as we have
seen in Panem. The clothes that they have where somehow medieval. During the
parade of the representatives of the districts for the Quarter Quell, they were
riding horse chariots as they paraded in Panem. Katniss also used bows and
arrows to hunt in the wild for their sources of food and even traded the
animals which she hunts for money. Also, the people of Panem where entertained
with the misfortunes of others, just like the people of Rome before when they
fed the Jews to lions. Present. The Districts of Panem each have their own
industry which is also present now in our own situation in real life. There is
the presence of competition, survival of the fittest, and hierarchy of social
classes in society. Future. The movie depicts the future with the advance
technologies that they had, not only in Panem, but also in some parts of the
districts.
Science, technology, and society have its
own role in each district, but there are still constraints because the
districts are under the rule of Panem. They have technology in their own
industries and are living in a society under the rule of Panem. But they cannot
communicate with people from other districts.
Over-all, the Catching Fire is a great movie
and, for sure, the third installment, The Mockingjay, will be something that
people will anticipate to watch.
